  Program Type:   Emergency Housing Assistance 
 
  Intended for:   Home owners or those at risk of becoming homeless 
 
  Description:  Various programs are available for households in need of housing repairs but are unable to afford them. Several emergency repair programs are available to qualified applicants and - or for those in danger of becoming homeless.
 


Programs of this type:
 Chicago Emergency Housing Assistance Program 
DOH offers deferred loans to owner-occupants of 1-4 unit residential buildings to repair dangerous, hazardous and life threatening conditions. Applicants must live in the property, and have no other means to pay for repairs. After one year, the loan is fully forgiven. If the property is sold within one year of receipt of assistance, the entire loan must be repaid.

 Aurora- Emergency Housing Rehabilitation Program 
Based on family size and total household income verification, the City of Aurora Neighborhood Redevelopment will provide through the Community Development Block Grant Program a zero-interest, deferred payment loan for the cost of emergency home repairs up to a $5,000 maximum. Technical assistance is also available at no cost for determining what needs to be done, how it should be done, and review of bids from contractors. Apply in person.
 
 NHS: Home Repair Program 
NHS offers home improvement loans for large or small needs, ranging from general home improvements (e.g. new kitchen, roof, siding, central air-conditioning, etc.) to home safety improvements such as correcting dangerous electrical problems or hazardous heating systems. NHS also offers loans for substantial rehabilitation of 1- to 4-unit buildings.

 NHS: Chicago Home Safety Partnership 
Through our partnerships with insurance companies, the City of Chicago Department of Housing and the Chicago Fire Department, NHS offers free Home Safety Evaluations for Chicago homeowners who want to improve the fire safety in their homes. NHS offers low interest loans for home improvements that will correct fire and safety hazards

 DuPage Housing and Emergency Rental Assistance 
Income eligible households may receive limited financial assistance with their rent or mortgage.
Client must live in DuPage County, and have not received assistance in the past 12 months Meet income guidelines as directed by funding source available at that time Cannot be late in payment of more than the current month Must have received a late
 
 Alliance to End Homelessness 
The Alliance to End Homelessness in Suburban Cook County is a non-profit organization responsible for planning and coordinating homeless services and housing options for all of Cook County outside of Chicago and Evanston.

 Connections for the Homeless, Inc. 
Connections for the Homeless works with a variety of communities in northeast Cook County through direct services and education to prevent and reduce homelessness among individuals and families.
 
 Crisis Center for South Suburbia 
Emergency, short-term shelter is provided to women and children who are experiencing domestic violence. The Center provides housing for up to 60 days in a 35-bed, handicap accessible residential facility. The emergency shelter, 24-hour hotline, and counseling program has been in existence for 23 years.
 
 Home of the Sparrow 
Home of the Sparrow provides transitional shelter for homeless women and their children in the Northwest Suburbs, with shelters in Crystal Lake, McHenry, and Palatine. Home of the Sparrow strives to empower individuals and families to eliminate homelessness, joblessness and hunger by teaching self-reliance, independence and self-discipline.
To be eligible for services, clients must meet the following criteria: 1) Be homeless. 2) Be at least 18 years of age. 3) Be a single female or a female head of household. 4) Be clean and sober for at least six months if there is a previo
